Join us April 2nd through May 7th, once a week for 1.5 hours, where our experienced instructors will guide you through lectures designed to improve your ability to make swift and effective decisions on the fireground.
Inspired by the principles outlined in the Mind of Fire book, this academy class dives into the art and science of decision-making under pressure. Designed for firefighters, officers, and emergency responders, the course explores the psychological, emotional, and tactical processes that drive effective decision-making in high-stakes environments.
Participants will gain insights into:
-Cognitive processes involved in decision making as well as common biases and heuristics affecting choices
-How the brain processes information. Understanding how your vision works and it influences your brain.
-Perceptual biases and their impact.
-The OODA loop and adapting it to make effective decisions.
-Implicit vs Explicit decision making -Understanding your genetic heritage and its influence on perception and decision making.
- How stress and adrenaline impact decision-making.
- Techniques for maintaining clarity and control in chaotic situations.
-The importance of intuition and experience in rapid assessments.
-Strategies for building decision-making confidence and resilience.
-Practical tools to balance risk and safety in critical scenarios.
Using real-world examples, scenario-based training, and interactive discussions, the course bridges theory and practice to empower emergency professionals to make split-second decisions that save lives and protect property. Whether you’re a seasoned firefighter or an emerging leader, this class will sharpen your skills and mindset, preparing you for whatever challenges the fireground presents.
Instructor Info: Kiel Samsing is a Lieutenant with the Newport News Fire Department. He has also been a volunteer and part time firefighter with experience in both urban and rural environments. He is a hands on/lecture instructor as well as a keynote speaker. Kiel is a subject matter expert in decision making.
